at the end of the day i shut down the imac and clear cookies and cache.again it may be just me worrying for nothing as this is my first imac ( was a hand-me down from brother,) and in the 3 months i have had it learning myself to use it i have killed the wireless keyboard and now it seems i have damaged the scroll ball on mouse cleaning it using the method of rolling it over paper but i pressed too hard and now the scroll whell will not work when i assign a application to it ( like opening spaces or all windows) but now scrolls up and down, side to side.

Though the one thing i have noticed since i conducted test is that when i now switch imac on the sleep button also comes on when i power up. I have done the hardware test and have heard all the fans been tested and it seems to be the bottom fan at low revs.like i said it is barely noticeable at times and i think i just panicked.i use my imac mostly for e-mail and surfing dont down load any huge files movies or music.

In addition, software conflicts can cause the fans to increase in speed, but since you don't appear to be having a heat or fan speed problem, it may be that your iMac fans have simply gotten a bit looser and noisier over the three years.ġst of all a huge thanks to all who took time to advise here 🙂 great to know there are folk out there patient enough to help a newbie like me here. Perhaps the iMac is doing more demanding work than before, but still with the same amount of RAM. There may be logical reasons why you are noticing noises now that you didn't notice before. We're at a bit of a disadvantage advising you much further since we don't know if, or how, your usage has changed, if you have any pre-Intel software installed (or transferred from older Macs), or whether you're gaming now - but weren't in the past. Is it possible to reduce the degree of irritation you're noticing by moving your iMac six inches or so further away from the wall or furniture that I assume is behind it? Or by relocating it to another part of the room, or even a different room (strictly for test purposes)? Not only is the heat being exhausted towards the rear, but fan noise is directed from the rear of the case and is possibly being reflected back to your ears. The case designs are significantly different and a comparison of having *perfect examples* of each model working side-by-side would allow the differences to easily stand out.Ĭompared to the aluminum model iMacs, it's fair to say that your model is more noisy, but I had three of those early 2006 models working side by side and in 2006 I thought they were noticeably more quiet than most of the G5 iMacs that had preceded them, so at some level it's all relative. You should not confuse the two models and expect to be able to get away with lowering your fan speeds in an effort to make it quieter.

The aluminum models dissipate much of their heat by the aluminum case acting as a heat sink, and have much less need for fans.

The early 2006 iMacs run hotter than the newer aluminum iMacs, and have fans that need to be spinning simply to prevent heat build-up.
